QUARTETTO WERTHER IN PINEROLO (TORINO, ITALY) FOR ACCADEMIA DI MUSICA DI PINEROLO.
Quartetto Werther, prizewinner at Pinerolo International Chamber Musica Competition, comes back to Pinerolo on February 24th 8,30pm at Accademia for a concert in g minor “Desire for nonexistent things”, including Gabriel Fauré’s piano quartet in g minor op. 45 and Johannes Brahms’ piano quartet in g minor op. 25. As written on AdP website “Quartetto Werther is certainly one of the most representative groups, considered among the most promising chamber music groups on the national and international concert scene. The literature for piano quartet is not vast compared to other chamber music repertoire , but it is dotted with undisputed masterpieces; the three quartets by Johannes Brahms are the pinnacle, and the two quartets by Fauré are also shining examples and testament to the inspiration of the great French composer. The Quartet , Op. 25, is a grandiose, symphonic composition, as demonstrated by the fact that Schoenberg arranged it for orchestra. It consists of a dark and tragic first movement, an Intermezzo that replaces the usual Scherzo and is based on a misty atmosphere of great melancholy, an Andante con moto that seems to flow like the Rhine, and a Rondò alla Zingarese whose very title betrays its improvisational gypsy origins. Fauré was well aware of Brahms’s works, and this is evident in his second quartet, where Franck’s influence is also significant. Here is a testimony from the composer regarding an effect perceived in the Andante: ” I remember having inadvertently translated the distant memory of a carillon of bells, a reverie, perhaps the desire for things that do not exist: and there lies the realm of music .”
